Colon Cleansing: The Good, the Bad and the Harmful
Our body has many different organs which all perform important functions to keep us healthy. When we were born, these organs developed in order to function normally without the aid of medicine. As we progress through life, we may form some unhealthy habits which can lead to health problems requiring medication and treatment.
Also, there are parts of our body that is dependent on the proper function of another part. A break down in one area can lead to serious conditions.
Our colon is one of the most important organ functions in our body. The colon is part of our body’s digestive system which is responsible for moving waste material that has accumulated from the small intestine to the rectum.
Water is absorbed as the colon transport the waste to the rectum. Other harmful materials may also be absorbed if it takes a long time for the waste material to pass through. This can clog the colon and require treatment to restore it to its natural function. Alternative medicine experts suggest colon cleansing to remedy this problem.
There are a lot of products on the market today which offer ways to cleanse the colon. The concern is that over time, the body will develop certain diseases, become overweight and suffer from constipation as a result of toxins that have built up in our system.
Alternative medicine experts believe that there are many health benefits to colon cleansing. Toxins are removed from our bodies which boost energy levels and the immune system.
Keeping the colon functioning at its optimum best can benefit other organs in our bodies, such as the liver and kidney.
While it is true that a healthy colon is important to have good health, medical doctors do not agree that there are benefits to colon cleansing. In fact, many do not believe this procedure is a way to prevent diseases or have better health.
Doctors feel that since the colon naturally eliminates waste in our bodies, the use of special diets, pills or enemas are unnecessary. They also believe that it can be harmful because some of the cleansing regimens may disrupt the balance of water and sodium absorption.
Long-term use can lead to malnutrition, anemia or even heart failure. The best thing to do is to consult with your doctor if you are having irregular bowel problems. Drinking more water and eating foods rich in fiber may be the best solution.
